500px

i came across this app while browsing through the appstore the other day, and i have to admit it is pretty amazing – its a photo gallery a bit like flickr but all of the work i saw on the app was just beautiful – perhaps because the app just displays the best of the best. if you take a subscription there is also a hell of a lot of naked women on the site – though this is all artistic and not pornographic.

The whole thing makes me want to get hold of a copy of photoshop – some of the image processing is just amazing, its worth taking a look – 500px.com – i could happily spend hours scrolling through the pics on the iPad app.

iPlayer

Last week i downloaded the BBC iPlayer for my iPad and i have to admit i love it. theres a 65kr per month subscription but i think its more than worth it when you look at the pure diversity of programs that are on it; So whats been happening is in the evenings I’ve been choosing programs, downloading them to my iPad and watching them on the way too and from work – this  is also good for those hours you end up stuck in airports.

So far I’ve been watching mostly doctor who, and Judge John Deed – but theres enough new stuff on there to keep me busy for a long time. I love the fact that with airplay i can also stream these programs directly to my TV.

Incidently for anyone that doesn’t realize it you can manage your subscriptions through iTunes – on the iPad its easy to subscribe but it took me a while to figure out how to remove a subscription after.

Update 2011-12-07: now this app is available for the iPhone ! Cool!

The new barriers

The tube station where I live has new barriers – they took the old out and rather than having the bar that you push through the new ones open like a set of transparent plexiglas doors. I never really thought about the impact this would have until I saw a group of young kids there this morning. What they used to do was rather than pay for a ticket they would stand close to the barrier and kick underneath it – activating the sensor at the other side as if someone was coming out of the station rather than going in and releasing the mechanism. These kids were school kids – didn’t look like trouble makers but they obviously had never paid for a ticket in their lives because now their old trick didn’t work they didn’t know what to do about it. Part of me felt sorry for them, but then part of me got to thinking about how many people there are in any given society who’s lifestyle is dependent on things like avoiding paying for tickets. I know not everyone is rich but why should there be two standards? Why should I have to pay for tickets when others do not?

The train service in Stockholm on my local line should be returning to normal today but hasn’t so far, which didn’t surprise me – I wonder if it will or if there will be further delays. The trains these days are packed like sardines – Stockholm used to have a really good underground system but now the prices increase and the service is worsening it starts to feel like the London underground. Not good!

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Back when i was a kid, i remember flicking through the tv channels and coming across an old black and white movie on BBC2. That movie was (you guessed it) “The Day The Earth Stood Still”. I was transfixed and watched it from start to end – probably the first black and white film i ever saw. Any sci-fi buff would know this movie – its one of the classics, Produced in 1951 starring Micheal Rennie and Patricia Neal. The movie is about a guy that comes to earth and is concerned about the fate of humanity. He tries to talk to the world, ends up getting shot, and the world narrowly escapes doom as his robot “Gort” has standing orders to blow up the planet if the humans don’t play ball. Its not a special effects movie (special effects just didn’t really exist in 1951)

The film was remade starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connoly, but the new movie whilst it was good in its own right, just wasn’t nearly as good as the original. I rewatched it recently (i was scanning it into my apple TV)- If you like sci-fi and haven’t seen this film i recommend you go out and see it now!

iOS5 and other cool things

Today was a bigger day than i thought – i knew that iOS 5 was coming out last night and i admit i had trouble downloading and installing it like many people – apples servers were just overloaded. I haven’t had a chance to really play with it yet because i am working today, but i managed to get it installed in the end – just by waiting and retrying. Of course its not just iOS i have had to upgrade, i had to upgrade:

  • iTunes
  • MacOS (2 machines)
  • MobileMe to iCloud
  • AppleTV
Now i can stream my iPad directly to my appletv – as if i have a hdmi cable plugged into it. Pretty cool stuff. It also allows me to view my photo stream there. Now if i take a pic with my iPhone or iPad it automatically gets moved into my photo stream. You can of course turn that off but i have no idea if you can actually delete the pictures. I read a forum entry a few minutes ago that made me laugh:
I’ve set up iCloud on my mac and iPhone and I turned on Photostream, which is an awesome thing to have. Every picture I take with my iPhone gets streamed to the cloud and to my iMac. But here’s the annoying thing: EVERY picture I take with my iPhone gets streamed to the cloud. Now I have way too much photos of me in embarrassing situations and positions and I can’t find a way to delete them. They all appear on my iMac and in the cloud. To be honest, that’s not exactly what I want. So does anyone have an idea how to delete these photos? (I know they will be deletend in 30 days, but I want them deleted now.)
The other really cool thing is sweden now base movie rental capability in sweden! i don’t know if this happened today but its certainly happened recently. There doesn’t seem to be a huge number of films, but hell its a start. anyway my lunch break is now over so i had better get back to it. i am looking forward to tinkering with iOS5 a bit later today.

The Pox – Fast Forward

Days 5+6 were fairly uneventful – there were no new spots thankfully, although i was generally a bit zonked out, and feeing uncomfortable – some of the original spots have gone down now, and no new spots were spotted. This morning i feel tired sure, but beyond that it looks like i am over the worse of this. I just have to wait for the remainder of the spots to disappear. I have to stay out of the office, but i don’t see any reason why i can’t be working. Today i think i will be playing catch up. Emails, phone calls, status calls, and trying to cram some meetings in tomorrow if possible. The light is definitely on the horizon today – there were many things i wanted to get done at work this week, so i will just have to crack on with it. I still have some spots, but they are not nearly as angry as they were a day back.

The pox continues

Ok, here’s some pics Monday (Day 4) – as last time I looked the poll said I should show them. These pics were taken today. I still have a few new spots on there way and for some reason I have been cold sweating a lot. I didn’t do anything today basically I just slept on the sofa – I’m surprised it’s 20.32 now. I think I am going to continue laying on the sofa practicing levitation techniques for a few hours and maybe catch some tv.

I saw my eve online blog went out – I totally forgot that I scheduled that a week back. Was a bit of a surprise go see it go out in the middle of the chicken pox saga. Tomorrow some of the local parents have asked if they could bring their kids over !

Edit: I just reread this and realized how disjointed and disconnected it seems; sentences are really short and there are too many full stops – it’s like spots are breaking out all over my blog!

A change of direction for EVE online

This is a mail I received from the CEO of eve online (it went to everyone – it’s an excerpt of a bigger mail and I liked it because it’s not often you see a CEO be quite so humble. Some of the changes they made with eve were not well received. I didn’t like there characters running through a space station view because I felt it detracted from everything that made eve great. I look forward to seeing this game in 6 months.Yes that is a screenshot from the game – it’s beautiful, here’s the mail:

The past few months have been very humbling for me. I’ve done much soul searching, and what follows is my sincere effort to clear the air with all of you. Please bear with me as I find my way through.

The estrangement from CCP that many of you have been feeling of late is my fault, and for that I am truly sorry. There are many contributing factors, but in the end it is I who must shoulder the responsibility for much of what has happened. In short, my zeal for pushing EVE to her true potential made me lose sight of doing the simple things right. I was impatient when I should have been cautious, defiant when I should have been conciliatory and arrogant when I should have been humble.

This soul searching took me back to when EVE was just an idea. Bringing her to life in 2003 was, in many people’s minds, impossible. But we found a way because EVE is something unique in the world. Getting her to 100,000 subscribers was an even more fantastical feat. Before long, we were launching in China, making DUST 514, merging with White Wolf to build World of Darkness, building Carbon, growing the company to 600 people, increasing our subscriber count beyond that of the population of Iceland and on and on, one resounding success after the next despite earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and even a world economic collapse.

Somewhere along the way, I began taking success for granted. As hubris set in, I became less inclined to listen to pleas for caution. Red flags raised by very smart people both at CCP and in the community went unheeded because of my stubborn refusal to allow adversity to gain purchase on our plans. Mistakes, even when they were acknowledged, often went unanalyzed, leaving the door open for them to be repeated.

You have spoken, loudly and clearly, with your words and with your actions. And there were definitely moments in recent history when I wish I would have listened more and taken a different path.

I was wrong and I admit it.
